We’ve Gone to the Dogs

One of our favorite things is spending time with black dog. Whether it be camping, hiking, or just hanging out, things are always best when we’re hanging out with Maddy. In May we had two big doggie events which, as expected, proved to be highly entertaining.

Early in the month we participated, once again, in the Oregon Humane Society’s annual Doggie Dash. This is a premiere Portland event and is attended by over 2000 dogs and their humans every year with proceeds going towards the Humane Society.

The “dash” consists of either a 1.5 mile walk along the waterfront at Tom McCall park or the walk we always do, a 2.5 mile walk which crosses the Willamette River, follows the Eastside Esplanade, and heads back to the park via the Steel Bridge.

Along with the dash there are booths of dog supplies and vendors and events ranging from agility competitions to best kisser.

The event beat it’s goal and raised over $394,000 for the animals. It was a gorgeous morning, fun event and all for a good cause.

Our second doggie event of the month took place along the Oregon coast in Newport. For the last few years Rogue Brewery has been hosting the Brewers Memorial Ale Fest, in honor of their former mascot, a black lab named Brewer. They host over 50 breweries along with several food stalls, a dog wash, and a variety of competitions. All proceeds go to several charities for animals long the central coast.

We stayed at South Beach State Park,

conveniently located walking distance from the ale fest, along a lovely paved path to the South Jetty.

We spent several hours drinking great Northwest beer, eating some of the best pulled pork sliders ever, and watching the dogs show off for their humans.

On the way back to camp we were startled by the sound of cannon fire! Cannon fire you ask? Yep, two pirates ships were sailing into the Port of Newport while undergoing a mock battle. What an enjoyable and unexpected treat to sit for awhile and watch it all.

Back at camp we had a fantastic dinner and some aged whiskey around the fire. Another amazing day, enjoying time together as a pack and helping other animals in the process. Can’t wait for next year!
