My Fascination with Doors

Doors are my favorite photography subject. I am fascinated, not just by the doors themselves, but by the stories I imagine they could tell if only they had the words.

Some of my all-time favorites call Zanzibar home. This East-African Archipelago, lying around 20 miles off the coast of Tanzania, is one of the fascinating places we have ever traveled. Highlighted by the ancient city of Stone Town, the archipelago is best known as a trading route between Africa and the East, trading both in spices and slaves. Fortunately, the slave trade is over, and spice trading and tourism are the main economy, but the brutal history exists in several museums and monuments in town. The doors of Zanzibar have a rich history.

Mexico, our most visited country, offers up spectacular doors. Colorful, vibrant, and full of the energy that makes this such a beloved travel destination. While fantastic doors exist across the country, many of my favorites have shown up in our favorite place, Puerto Vallarta. Mexico simply makes me happy.

Finally, India, the most inspiring place I have ever been. A mix of chaos and culture, India’s rich heritage of carving and artistic endeavors has led to extraordinary artwork. World class carvers adorn the country with exquisite carvings in both wood and stone. The faded glory of so much of the country constantly left me wanting more.

Each country has it’s own magic, and it’s own wonderful doors, and I can’t wait to go back in search of more, each with a story to tell.

  1. Those are some very lovely doors! I tend to have a similar obsession, but with windows (I seriously think that about 30% of our honeymoon photos from Charleston & Savannah are of windows…). Then again, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen doors quite as lovely as these… if I did, I think I’d have quite the collection of door-themed photos too!

    • I love windows too and you are right on…. I love the architecture in general of Savannah and Charleston.
