We recently camped at East Lake, in Central Oregon, for the first time and what a joy! Sitting at 6500ft elevation, in the Newberry Crater, it is absolutely a summer outing, but the gorgeous lake, high desert landscape, and endless night skies, more than make up for the chill in the air.
East Lake sits 5 miles from Paulina Lake, and offers up three campground choices. Small East Lake campground, East Lake RV resort, and our choice, Cinder Hill Campground. East Lake RV Resort offers up cabins, as well as a store and restaurant but, after driving through the others, as well as those at neighboring Paulina Lake, I have to say we scored gold!
The sites at Cinder Hill are spacious with a lot of vegetation for privacy. Bathrooms are limited to a few toilet blocks, but with the lake and pebble-sand combo beach lining the lake, who cares about the facilities.
A luscious, long holiday weekend was just what we needed. Having no cell service an added benefit! We hiked, we napped, Aspen swam, Porter waded, and Jim fished. Overall, an exceptional weekend away. While a four-six hour drive, traffic dependent, means Cinder Hill won’t be on our normal camp rotation, we will absolutely make an effort to return to this little piece of paradise!
