I adore Jimmy Buffet. While not quite as obsessed as many of his parrot head tribe, following him around the world on tour dates, I have been an avid fan for many a year. In fact, our truck-campers name of Tequila is based on our personal theme song, Margaritaville. For myself, and I would presume the majority of Jimmy’s fans, I find great wisdom in the lyrics of his song.
I see a white sail
skipping cross a blue bay
and I say Someday I Will
I see a young man
strumming on a green guitar
and I say Someday I Will
Life, as we know it these days, is a complex mix of over the top anticipation on hitting the road, the daunting task of ridding ourselves of 27 years of material stuff, and many hours spent discussing the challenges we will face in making a life for ourselves on the road. For the life we seek is not going to be easily won, but we know it is possible. We spend hours reading the blogs and wise words from those who are already out there, living a nomadic life, creating a digital lifestyle. We know we are just as smart, as motivated, as capable as they.
I don’t have a plan
It’s not that kind of thing
I’m not Martin Luther King
I don’t have a dream
It’s just sometimes I know
That’s the way I’m supposed to go
And yet, doubt exists. What if we can’t make it work? What if we come home in 2 years with our tails between our legs, stuck back in the 9-5 we so disdain now? What if everyone else is is better prepared, more skilled, more talented than we? Common fears, even among those already out there making it work, but valid fear nonetheless.
I see a flying boat
and I get a lump in my throat
and I say Someday I Will
Someday
I believe the answer is PASSION. I have recently read many shared memories of Scott Dinsmore, best known as the founder of the inspirational “Live your Legend”. Scott recently was killed in a freak accident on Mt. Kilimanjaro, and yet, while mourning the loss of someone who has influenced so many, I have to believe that he would not mourn the way he died, climbing a mountain in Africa with his wife, fulfilling his dream of traveling the world.
So whatever thrills you
Anything you love to do
Just say someday I will
At the end of his well-known TED talk, Scott asks the only question that he considers truly important, “what is it that you can’t not do?” The key to living a joyful life, to finding your passion, to discovering that which stirs your soul, is to uncover that which you must do, in spite of potential obstacles, and naysayers, and doubts.
Don’t need to know who
May help you make it come true
Just say someday I will
As usual, the Universe listened to my concerns and responded and, for the first time in quite awhile, I heard one of my favorite Buffet songs, Someday I Will, from one of my favorite of his albums; the aptly named Far Side of the World.
Don’t have to tear it all apart
All you need’s a place to start And if it never worked before
Try it just once more
If you have a passion at all
Just say, someday I will
Someday
Someday I will
Someday
And so I end this, not with another quote from Jimmy (never fear, there will be more to come!), but from another somewhat inspiring fellow…
“I have learned, that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
-Henry David Thoreau
Let the adventure commence….
Great post! I love that attitude. Who knows what’s around the corner, why shouldn’t you do the things you long to do now? even if you come back in a couple of years you can say that you’ve tried, where so many others didn’t even do that. If something means that much to you then it will probably work out. 🙂
Thank you so much Andrew ~ We face the challenges ahead fully committed to making it work, but have to admit the fears creep in occassionally… Looking forward to the next couple of months final preparations before we follow our dreams!
“What if we can’t make it work? What if we come home in 2 years with our tails between our legs, stuck back in the 9-5 we so disdain now?”
Then you’ll come home in 2 years knowing that you gave it your all with absolutely no regrets because you followed your passion. 🙂
You are totally right Patti. We figure, at the very least, we’re embarking on an amazing adventure!
