Missing Mexico

It’s been three months since we left and I miss it. There is something about this place that always draws me back. We’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but the appeal never fades. In spite of the growing pains that have come with expansion, the vivid spirit of Puerto Vallarta remains true.

What has always been the big draw for me is not just the beaches, but the culture, the music, the food, the people, the COLOR. Life at home, with blocks of housing developments in shades of cream, white, grey and tan seems so drab, so lifeless, so monochromatic, but Mexico is alive with brilliant pops of color around every turn.

When there I find myself wearing brighter colors, more jewelry, red lipstick. The heat and sultriness slow life down and everything becomes more brilliant in contrast. Strolling the neighborhoods, I take the time to admire the fuchsia of the bougainvillea and the cooling brightness of the paint.

I stop frequently for photos, color is everywhere. The blues and greens of the bowls in the lobby of our hotel stand out in stark contrast against the white washed walls.

Random alleyways bring an especially vibrant wall, elaborately scrolled ironwork, or an unexpected mosaic.

In Mexico I feel at home. At peace. In my element. I love the slow pace. The al fresco lifestyle. The festivals. The strength of family connections. The history.

This land speaks to me on a deep, subconscious level and is guaranteed to be part of my soul forever.

  1. I LOVE the colors of the rest of the world. The US seems to be a sea of beige and muted (fill in the blank primary color) at times. The colors of the rest of the world make everything else feel so alive!

    • I agree. I often ask myself what everyone is so afraid of that causes them to choose to surround themselves with beige!

  2. I concur with the color of Puerto Vallarta and the Caribbean country seems to have more taste for lively colors. Maybe because they spend more time outside there houses to look at them!

    • You may be right Michel! I think it’s something to do with all the sun, as well. When I see a brightly painted house here in, often grey, Portland, it just looks odd!
