Costa Rica’s Capital in Photos

We have to be honest, San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital, didn’t win our hearts but did lend itself to some intriguing photos. We did appreciate the pleasant climate combined with the color and vitality that is so evident in Latin American cultures. It’s easy enough to make a list of things to see and do in San Jose but we’re going to simply share our favorite moments in photos to inspire you to head to this stunning country and find your own magic.

Although we found the cuisine to be very mild in spice, we did delight in the stunning and varied peppers available at the central market.

The ideal climate produced gorgeous flora and fauna all on full display around every corner.

Near the central bus station was the home to one of the many bomberos, AKA fire station, featuring this wonderful statue.

Architecture near the main plaza still holds the aura of an earlier time when the coffee barons of the 19th century built stunning buildings showcasing elaborate facades.

Markets are a favorite stop in any city we visit around the world as much for the food opportunities as for the colorful offerings to be found inside. Including a pour-over drip coffee maker, the design unlike anything we’d seen before.

Murals and street art always grab our attention and the wall of a hostel near the pedestrian center was absolutely stunning.

San Jose is also where we got introduced to the “sodas”, Costa Rica’s answer to a local cafe, taqueria, or trattoria depending on what you’re familiar with. Popular for their delicious, filling, and economical casados, the favorite lunchtime dish of the country, and jugos naturales the wonderfully refreshing fresh fruit juice served throughout the country.

If you’re heading to Costa Rica you’re most likely going to be flying in or out of San Jose. Make sure to spend a day or two to appreciate what the capital has to offer.
