It’s All About the Water in La Jolla!

La Jolla, California is a water lovers paradise. Located just a short distance north of the dynamic city of San Diego, La Jolla is an easy day trip or a spectacular spot to spend a little longer.

Although dining and land-based activities are fantastic most visitors to La Jolla quickly come to understand it’s all about with water. Here are six top options for spending your time in and around the sea in this stunning West Coast city.

La Jolla Shores Park~

This large, flat patch of sand is the largest in the area, making it seem uncrowded even on a busy weekend afternoon. The reefs off-shore make it ideal for swimming or playing in the water although on the north end of the beach enough swells can be found to inspire you to learn to surf. Next to the beach grassy Kellogg Park and it’s nearby restaurants and shops can keep the whole family happy for the entire day and your furry friends are even allowed before 9 am or after 5 pm.

La Jolla Underwater Park~

For unbelievable snorkeling head to the Underwater Park where you can swim with orange garibaldi, California’s state fish, leopard sharks, rays and more. Kayak, SUP, or snorkel your way among these amazing sea creatures and enjoy an extra-special spectacle during the leopard shark incubation period in the summer.

Sunny Jim Sea Cave~

Sunny Jim’s is a rarity in that you can access this sea cave by land down an old wooden staircase. Work began in 1902 to connect this sea cave to the shore and visitors have been enjoying this unique spot ever since.

Shell Beach Tide Pools~

Whether you’re traveling with children or not, a stop at Shell Beach to visit the tide pools is a must. When the tides are out these pools are swarming with life and you can spot small fish, crabs, starfish, and perhaps even an occasional octopus in addition to sea anemones and urchins. A perfect place to stop before heading to your nearby hotel for an evening of relaxation after a day at the beach.

Windansea Beach~

California surf fever? The surfing culture of this state is legendary and Windansea Beach is an excellent spot to check out the action. For experienced surfers it may be

your favorite spot to catch a big swell and but for everyone else, it is an enjoyable spot to sit back with a cold drink and admire the grace of this exciting sport.

Birch Aquarium~

Well-known Scripps Institution of Oceanography hosts an interesting aquarium for young and old alike. All ages will enjoy seeing over 60 different habitats filled with sea creatures from the all around the west coast. The younger crowd especially loves the hands-on exhibit at Birch which allows you to touch sea life such as sea cucumbers and sea stars.

Whether you are in the area for a short visit or a long-time resident, water is truly the lifeblood of the city and there are many ways to enjoy it in your own way.
