The Map So Far

Our Travels, by Continent

Everything below is somewhere we have actually set foot, pulled from 30 years of our own stories and photos. We have left off the places we have only written about or still dream of, so what you see is the real map. And there is always more on the way.

USA

Home base in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, plus years of camping and workamping across the West.

The place we keep coming back to. We lived in Puerto Vallarta and now spend about five months a year here.

Reached on the Pan-American drive. Time on Lake Atitlan learning permaculture and finding textiles in San Juan la Laguna.

Months exploring the Orosi Valley, Manuel Antonio National Park and the Pacific coast.

A favorite. Chiang Mai street life, Thai orchids, and the quiet side of Koh Samui.

A junk-boat night in Halong Bay out of Hanoi, after four months on the road.

Phnom Penh became home base for over a week. The ruins of Angkor and a long boat to Battambang.

Luang Prabang at the meeting of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, with its night market and dawn alms.

A month on Bali, lingering on the quiet north coast at Lovina after the post-bombing tourist slump.

A 28-hour stopover that, unlike most, was worth every hour.

Rajasthan in four parts: camel carts, desert forts, and getting scammed on arrival in Delhi.

Three weeks in 2000, including the Yangtze and the Great Wall.

A whirlwind month: a Nile cruise, Luxor in the heat, Alexandria, and Cairo.

The start of a three-month overland trip from Nairobi to Cape Town through seven countries.

The Ngorongoro Crater and its wildlife, and the winding lanes of Stone Town on Zanzibar.

Camping in the Okavango Delta, one of the least populated countries on earth.

The dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib-Naukluft, and our 18th anniversary sunrise.

Cape Town, the end of the long overland route down the continent.

A 16-day meander through Barcelona, Seville and Granada on a Leisurely Spain tour.

Vernazza on the Cinque Terre, one of the places that felt like coming home.

Istanbul, another of the cities that stayed with us.

Six weeks driving the East Coast from Byron Bay to Cairns, finding our stride around Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays.

A month by campervan. Country number two on our round-the-world trip, and one of the best.
