How about taking in a bit of Britain with a better climate? The Cayman Islands, a slightly less chaotic version of Southern Florida, gives you all of the charm of the island across the sea, but with the gorgeous water and white sand beaches of the Caribbean. Head to Grand Cayman for the resorts, to Cayman Brac for the fishing, or Little Cayman for exotic wildlife. Better yet, incorporate all three into a magical vacation that will create memories for a lifetime. image via Flickr by Katie Thebeau For the Intrepid Explorer — Sort ofSometimes, a mix of relaxation and adventure is the perfect vacation combination. The Dominican Republic offers just that. While the lovely beaches circling the island offer up enough Caribbean beauty to impress any beach connoisseur, it’s equally stunning in the less-traveled inland. A perfect day may just involve a hike through the lush tropical forest, which is a mere 30-minute drive from Puerto Plata. At Damajagua, hike up one side so you have the chance to jump into one of 27 waterfalls on the other! If that bit of adrenaline isn’t enough, head into Santo Domingo to visit the oldest stone church in the Americas, set in 1514 by Christopher Columbus’ son Diego. image via Flickr by puroticorico For Those Wanting to Keep it in the CountryPerhaps you don’t have a passport. Or you do have a passport but are looking to explore more of the territory of the United States and still want something exotic. Look no farther than Puerto Rico. This island territory offers colonial heritage, sprawling resorts, and a thriving Hispanic culture. Kayak the mangrove swamps at La Parquera, zip-line in Mucaro, or simply dance the night away at one of the many casinos. Puerto Rico offers up more than enough options to keep anyone satisfied, all while you’re surrounded by stunning scenery and interesting history. image via Flickr by dameetch Whatever type of vacation is on your bucket list, the islands of the Caribbean can deliver! |
Finding Magic
A “Magical Village” is a place with symbolism, legends, history, important events, day-to-day life – in other words, “magic” in its social and cultural manifestations, with great opportunities for tourism
We have long been fascinated by the Pueblo Magico towns of Mexico. At one point in the preparation I even suggested we try to visit ALL of them on our journey south. Well, that isn’t going to happen. But we are slowly checking some off the list. This past few weeks, as we are getting our road legs back underneath us, we have visited no less than six pueblo magicos, each seemingly more magical than the next.
The Insider’s Guide to Conquering Comic Con
Written in cooperation with Hipmunk’s Tailwind blog. Originally published by The Hipmunk on April 13,2016.
Another year, another multitude of Comic Cons to attend. Whether you’re hitting up the mother of all Cons in San Diego, cosplaying in NYC, or attending a smaller Comic Con in Grand Rapids or Amarillo, the following strategies will help ensure that you have a truly delightful time.
Buy tickets early.
Whenever possible, buy tickets online before the event. You’ll save money and avoid the heartbreak of arriving at Comic Con only to find out that the special event youneeded to see has already sold out.
Make a plan in advance.
There is so much to see at Comic Con, and it’s physically impossible to see it all. For this reason, it’s important to study the schedule and venue maps in advance so that you can plan out each day around your must-see events. If you want to see one of the major presentations (say, Game of Thrones in San Diego’s Hall H), keep in mind that you’ll need to budget in hours (and hours) of time for waiting in line. And because there are no guarantees that you’ll actually make it into the room you’re waiting in line to enter (especially because many venues don’t empty rooms after panels), it’s a good idea to have a backup plan (or several). One last tip: If you’re traveling with friends, remember to designate a meeting place before you split up for the day.
Bring cash.
Some vendors don’t accept credit cards, and ATM machines are few and far between. (And the ones that do exist are guaranteed to have insanely long lines). Spare yourself headaches and lost time by bringing plenty of cash with you to the venue.
Avoid parking (if possible).
It will come as no surprise that parking at Comic Con can be a major headache. In the rare cases that you do manage to find a spot near the venue, it’s likely it will cost you—some lots have been known to charge upwards of $50 per day. If at all possible, ditch the car and arrive at the venue via public transportation or on foot. If you must drive, be sure to arrive early in the day for the best chance at finding a spot.
Be social.
It’s a smart idea to download the venue’s app, which is an indispensable resource for navigating any Con. It can also be helpful to create a list on Twitter that includes the official Comic Con Twitter handle, any vendors that you want to see, and people whom you know will be present. Don’t underestimate how valuable real-time updates can be when you’ve been standing in line for three hours.
This tip also extends beyond the digital space. There are tons of great connections to be had at Comic Con, so don’t be shy about approaching people. Bonus: Chatting up fellow comics fans is a great way to pass the time while waiting in line. Which brings us to…
Prepare to wait.
We’ve mentioned that you’ll spend a lot of time waiting in line at Comic Con, right? We’re not kidding. Instead of hoping that it won’t happen to you, accept that it will—and then plan accordingly. Download podcasts to listen to, bring a book or journal, play games on your phone (just make sure it’s fully charged before Con), or simply settle in and enjoy the time to let your mind wander. Just remember to make sure you’re actually in the right line—sometimes lines bend and merge together, so check to be sure you aren’t wasting your time in the wrong place.
Practice self-care.
As always, you’ll be much more likely to enjoy yourself if you do what you can to avoid getting sick or burnt out. Stay hydrated, get enough sleep, wash your hands often, and pack healthy snacks—healthy food can be hard to come by at Cons, especially when you’re stuck waiting in line. Having snacks on hand can provide the blood sugar boost you need to continue having a great time.
Ask permission.
A common phrase heard round Con is that “Cosplay is Not Consent.” What this means is that just because someone is cosplaying (or simply present at Comic Con), that does not give you the right to touch them, harass them, or photograph them without their permission. If you want a picture, just ask—most people are more than happy to indulge. Be polite, keep your hands to yourself, and remember that everyone there is a human just like you.
Consider cybersecurity.
Wi-Fi is often available in most convention centers, but you’re likely to find that it’s painfully slow (or completely jammed) because of the sheer number of people trying to log on. You may see free networks available, but be cautious—some of these may be malicious. It’s a good idea to always practice good cyber-security strategies (even if this means you have to hold off on uploading photos to social media until you get home).
Above all else, remember to enjoy yourself. Though the lines may be long and your plans may change, the sheer number of interesting people and panels to see means that you’ll have a great time at Comic Con simply by going with the flow.

Built at the junction of three rivers, this Indiana city has always been a meeting point both in terms of the early traders who brought their wares here, and, culturally, where the French, English and American cultures met. Experiencing the Diversity of Europe’s Music Festivals
One of my favorite aspects of traveling to Europe is the sheer diversity of the continent. While the formation of the European Union and the opening of borders has made traveling between countries a breeze, it has not altered the differences in language, in history, or food.
In an ever-shrinking global world, Europe is still the place to be to experience a broad range of activities, interests and cultures, all within a short distance of one another. Nowhere is this more evident than in the diversity of the summer music festival scene.
Tomorrowland: Belguim
One of the largest festivals in Europe, the Tomorrowland Festival, sees over 300,000 visitors each year. Focused on electronic music, Tomorrowland’s massive venue features 15 stages with extravagant decorations, and globally celebrated DJs work their magic at each one. This festival’s campground, Dreamville, is almost as big of a draw as the music, and this festival sells out in minutes each year.

Download Rock Festival: United Kingdom
Regularly voted one of the best rock music festivals in all of Europe, the Download festival in Donington Park gives heavy metal and hard rock lovers three days of amazing music on five stages. A mix of old-school masters and new-generation musicians provide the background for an event that also includes an ale house and inflatable wedding chapel among its attractions.

Weather Festival: France
International artists flock to the futuristic Le Bourget airport, which lies north of Paris, for this three-day tribute to the best of electronic music. In this true open air environment, the unique location and multiple after-hours events keep the party marathon going nonstop.

Lucca Summer Festival ~ Italy
For family-friendly fun, head to picturesque Lucca, Italy, for its renowned summer festival. For over 19 years, spectators from all over the globe have flocked to the Piazza Napoleon to listen to Italian and international acts perform. This festival has developed a bit of a cult following, and one interesting fact is that the Dave Matthews band performed their longest concert ever — lasting over three hours — here in 2009.

OFF Festival: Poland
If you are looking for an inexpensive and unique festival, look no further than the OFF festival in Poland. What started as an alternative music festival has morphed into an all-arts experience. Exhibitions, workshops, and movie screenings all combine to make this the biggest festival in Poland. A unique facet of the event is the promotion of volunteer projects connected to the festival.

Regardless of which type of festival is right for you, Europe’s broad spectrum of venues, countries, and music sounds will offer an amazing experience. Many of the festivals can be reached by public transportation, and most offer camping. Wi-Fi and phone charging stations are common, and food and drink is readily available.
From an airport in France to historic Italy and from alternative to jazz, the music scene in Europe is alive and well, so enjoy the experience!
The Ties that Bind
We miss our people, our tribe. Especially now, during in what is low season in central Mexico (although why that is I am baffled), among empty campgrounds, we are missing those we love. With no new overlanders to connect with, our thoughts turn, even more, to friends back home.
Discovering Disney ~ and Beyond!

The state of California is vast, and encompasses one amazing site after another. For many, San Francisco is the bomb. The architecture, the stunning vistas from nearly everywhere in the city, the restaurant scene, the Embarcadaro, and Alcatraz offer just a few reasons for its popularity. Days or weeks could be spent touring it all.
Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport Waterfront
One thing San Francisco also has is a lot of very expensive hotels. If the city by the bay is your choice for your California dream vacation, consider staying near the airport. This city has a wonderful array of transportation options. By choosing a hotel near the airport, such as the Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport Waterfront, you will receive suites, many with water views, and all the amenities expected of the Embassy Suites hotel group, while being just a short ride from the city on BART. Before a full day of touring, enjoy a free, cooked to order, breakfast and return to enjoy a dip in the pool before retreating to your comfortably appointed room.

Seeking Silence
Lesson learned. Do not, and I repeat, do not, rent an apartment prior to arriving in town. Our three months in Puerto Vallarta was wonderful.. until it wasn’t. So much of our time was great; We got a lot of work done, writing for me and the launch of Jim’s first amazon product. We had visitors in the form of Jim’s parents and friends Dave and Anne. We swam and practiced yoga nearly daily. We enjoyed an extended time in one of our favorite cities in the world.
A Boutique Hotel for Any Taste in Maryland
Written in cooperation with Hipmunk’s Boutique Hotel Campaign 2016.
Maryland may not come to mind for many travelers when choosing a vacation destination, but this miniscule state in the Northeast offers up abundant waterways, historic cities, and a vast array of outdoor activities. In addition, the proximity to other major tourist stops along the East Coast makes a base in Maryland make perfect sense. While any number of hotel category options exist, why not spoil yourself with one of the many boutique hotels dotting this small region?
If a cruise around the vast waterways of the Northeast is on your bucket list, consider the Best Western Plus Hotel & Conference Center. Located very near the Baltimore Cruise Terminal, this lovely hotel offers up free breakfast, parking and Wi-Fi, and has a pool to relax in before or after your cruise. Nearby attractions such as the B&O Railroad Museum will entertain guests, and the Eastpoint Mall is a handy spot to pick up any necessary items or simply people watch.

Long an important seaport, Baltimore is seeped in history. The Star Spangled Banner was written at Fort McHenry, and multiple attractions draw travelers, whether they are interested in touring the U.S.S. Constitution or visiting the Babe Ruth Museum. To soothe the spirit at the end of a long day of sightseeing, perhaps consider the Hotel Monaco Baltimore, A Kimpton Hotel. Always popular, the Hotel Monaco chain enchants visitors with animal-print robes, minibars stocked with organic products, and luxuriously appointed rooms with designer toiletries. Pets are always warmly welcomed at the hotel, so your furry family members can enjoy the stay as well.

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor area is teeming with sightseeing, activities, and restaurants. A home base at the lovely Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Baltimore may be just the ticket. Rooms are well appointed with plush linens, luxury bath products, free Wi-Fi, and 30-inch televisions. Pets are welcome, and the property boasts an on-site restaurant, pool, and fitness center. However, what will really sell travelers on the property are the floor-to-ceiling windows in rooms overlooking the harbor!

One of the largest tourist draws in the country is Washington, D.C., and one smart way to spend your time there is to spend your nights across the border in Bethesda, Maryland. The Hyatt Regency Bethesda Hotel is the perfect location to take in the sights of Bethesda itself, but is also right on the Red Line metro access to Washington, D.C. The rooms themselves are generously sized and feature marble bathrooms, mahogany furniture, and excellent business features such as free Wi-Fi, docking stations, and good-sized desks.
